It's fun--mostly because Terence is a great, warm teacher who the kids love and trust. Then Duffy, the rigid dilettante, hands out "worksheets" and lectures on clarity. Luckily, the kids just draw funny comics and don't take my posturing too seriously. And in fact, they do like the worksheets, for the most part.

Here's some I handed out last week. Each kid blew through them in about 3 minutes!
(Click for bigger.)
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 313px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPKl2ykOCdYZwRWy61FXy2vcDJa5ONq22382wZHBkR0QpVdhYA9TRfTzdtKX_EY-UkjYJkBdQDL5wp1PcLJZM0aqwAr8RFXM2hhd0M90PZSOEy_vEUbczhtdwR7onDQqLk7d9ZXhzT5-Y/s400/CameraAngles001web.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451607167784874770" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 313px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsjxxxvCV7L8JvnMcVy7GKt2DJYq-NSSTyJRjb5-RFepRAuTll7eto26QVRw58Sw2dqwic_lu5y5EuBwo9p1nUdM_IommW-fCWcTOYZwBUPqKpJVOMeCvDbvj78DzjGqMUBSEZVjVcQwU/s400/CameraAngles002.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5451608517916842082" />Chris Duffyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02772797199649626618noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163464380269858289.post-61575579946804065922010-02-08T08:01:00.001-08:002010-03-22T15:10:31.849-07:00I am an professional editor!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 297px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV06zBC6p-vVYRnInd4BNEKXyQr7ipA1KteKGnYSewu2triI2QHsavG7qUlvxel3ZUzrEOyoWv8DF4B3AH8CipfVXAfRepoVwvXKczmhgs7s18coD6cUDB9VHKxz-1IgwbDxHgJLSjeLw/s400/chris_duffy_s.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435905304284284418" />
Did I mention I'm available to edit comics on a freelance basis? This was one of the first comics (well, more of a humor piece) that I did in my swank Brooklyn apartment with real live comics tools--crow quill, India ink, and bristol board. Turned out okay, if you like the doggie humor. It was never published anyplace but my sister in law liked it enough to hang a copy in her bathroom. That's the highest flattery as far as I'm concerned!

Please note, I did not draw the dog. It's from my trusty Webster's 9th New Collegiate Dictionary.

I never read a Tom Sutton story where I wasn't really drawn to the art and storytelling. Sutton approached every story with a cartoonist's sensibilities combined with an illustrator's chops--always efficiently done but with enough weird detail (sometimes more than enough) to make you look twice at a lot of images. Sort of like Toth via Wrightson...or something like that. Sutton's art always made it look like he was having a blast.

For a Charton horror comic, this Sutton-drawn story has an unusually coherent and forward-moving plot. Who wrote it? The Grand Comics Database doesn't list the writer, but I'm going to guess Tom himself did the job, because it's so much less a mess than most Charlton stories...the dialog and captions have a cartoonist's economy (at least for 1971, when it was originally published). But I could totally be wrong.

Chris Duffyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02772797199649626618noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163464380269858289.post-27221249215684200422009-06-07T16:47:00.001-07:002009-06-07T17:04:12.252-07:00Please note: Laura Galen=AwesomeNickelodeon Magazine, where I have been lucky enough to be comics editor for 12 years, has been discontinued. I'm incredibly honored to have worked there. It was the job of my life--I got to work with a vast array of talented and funny people (staff and cartoonists) and the end result was always a magazine I was proud to have been a part of. An amazing opportunity--one that frankly still dazzles me.

I owe it all to--and kids everywhere should thank--Laura Galen, who started and ran the magazine (as editor-in-chief and then as Editorial Director) for all 16 years, hired the staff, and always, always pushed for excellence. Take a bow, Laura! We love you and we loved Nick Mag!Chris Duffyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02772797199649626618noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163464380269858289.post-1728692948026359032009-04-15T07:27:00.000-07:002009-04-15T07:58:25.527-07:00King Aroo is coming!I haven't heard anything in the way of release dates yet, but Dean Mullaney at IDW is putting together a complete collection of Jack Kent's great comic King Aroo. I really don't have a lot to say except that Kent's work is really charming and it WORKS so well. Completely unpretentious but very smart.

Here's a Sunday from the mid 50s:

And here's a daily I was lucky to get off of ebay (scanned in color so you can see Kent's blue line work):

King Aroo lasted from 1950 through the mid 60's--a pretty long run by today's standards, but when talked about historically it's always considered a strip that got cut off in its youth. Only one reprint book ever came out during its run--covering much, but not all, of the first year. Rick Marschall's NEMO reprinted a fantastic surreal run of dailies in the 80s, and Tom Devlin edited a collection of Sunday's for an oversize Comics Journal special a few years ago (using Sundays from my collection, I'm collector-proud to add.) But all that adds up to a small fraction of the run of the strip.

I haven't used this spottily updated blog to plug anything until now, but if you like good cartooning, you should really check out this reprint series when it comes out!Chris Duffyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02772797199649626618noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163464380269858289.post-2835547135946395012008-09-07T10:47:00.000-07:002008-09-07T11:00:15.794-07:00Rufus and Flook Versus Moses Maggot 2As promised, more Flook. The cartoonist and jazz musician Wally Fawkes (using the pen name Trog) drew it from the 50s through the 80s, with various writers. According to what I've gleaned online, it was inspired in part by Barnaby and began as a whimsical mid-century "kid and magical pal" adventure strip. It grew to resemble Pogo in that it mixed humor with social and political commentary. Readers from the UK will please excuse my having to put everything in terms of American comics.

As for this book, which hails from the earlier period, it's pretty good! Eccentric characters having lighthearted fantastic adventures--not as dry and witty as Barnaby, but probably a better attention-grabber for kids. The drawing is pretty great in a style I can only call "British" (because it reminds me of other Brit comics I've seen--if anyone knows what specific tradition/influences Fawkes came out of, please post a comment and let me know!)

Mr. Fawkes recently retired from professional cartooning (he was an editorial cartoonist too).

Would folks be interested in scans of the entire book? I can post over a few weeks. Let me know after you get a taste!

Nice endpapers...

The collection starts with a collection of strips retelling how Rufus met Flook.

And now I'm a blogger!Chris Duffyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02772797199649626618noreply@blogger.com26tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163464380269858289.post-60289644502553564002008-06-07T13:41:00.000-07:002008-06-10T12:51:46.001-07:00Robotman "Around the World in 24 Hours", drawn by Jimmy ThompsonJimmy Thompson drew great Robotman backup comics in Star Spangled Comics and in Detective Comics in the 1940s. I've been on the lookout for Thompson Robotman stories ever since reading an enjoyable one in DC's GREATEST GOLDEN AGE STORIES EVER TOLD (bizarre title, yes). Recently, Pappy's Golden Age posted a great one from Detective 152.

Here's the only Thompson Robotman story I own--from Detective 151. Neither artist or character is that famous, and for that matter Thompson didn't even create the characters; Jerry Siegel and Leo Nowak did. It isn't brilliantly weird (like Fletcher Hanks's comics). It's just imaginative, funny, and well drawn (and nicely lettered, if I may be so nerdly). Still, I hope I get to see more of these stories.Chris Duffyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02772797199649626618noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163464380269858289.post-63123232550850431442008-02-12T10:52:00.000-08:002008-02-12T13:36:52.894-08:00Steve Gerber, 1947-2008I heard the news a few hours ago that comic book writer Steve Gerber died this past Sunday. Tom Spurgeon has a very good bio/appreciation up on his blog.

Steve Gerber was a huge part of my comics-obsessed childhood (I was born in 1967.) . There was real shit going down in his comics; I didn't get all of it, but it had a serious influence on me that a writer could take life inside the comics he was writing so seriously. I'm bad at describing a writer's work, so here are a few pages from his incredible run in Howard the Duck, published by Marvel.

From Howard the Duck, issue 2:

Gerber wasn't afraid to show pure negative rage on the part of a hero. I appreciated the honesty. That page is from the first appearance of Howard's nemesis, the Kidney Lady, who is pretty great, as nemeses go. (And much better than Dr. Bong, one of the series only missteps.)

From Howard the Duck, issue 5

Gerber's Howard the Duck series is often remembered for broad parody, social satire, and absurdist humor. But unlike, say, MAD or Nat Lamp, in Howard the Duck real human emotions are on display everywhere. It's a sentimental scene, but I love it. Howard is desperate for money, so he takes a job working for an appliance retailer. He goes to follow up on late payments for a TV and can't bear to repossess it when faced with the scene above. This is from one of my favorite issues. In it he also beats up a TV clown and protests against defamatory representations of ducks in comic books.

From Howard the Duck, issue 11

During a nervous breakdown, Howard is stuck on a bus with a bunch of crazies. This issue is really intense. The next few issues get even more intense (and supernatural). But this bus story is always what sticks in my mind.

From Howard the Duck, issue 19

Howard's human for an issue.

From Howard the Duck, issue 23

In a two-issue sort of parody of Star Wars, Howard is again allied with Korrek the Barbarian (who I think he met during his first appearance in Fear and Man-Thing). Howard also learns to use "the farce" which enables him to shoot deadly non-sequiturs out of a gun. At the time, it felt late to do a Star Wars riff (it was already 1978! Ancient history!) But I remember feeling relieved that this story wasn't quite as high-stakes as what had come before. By the way, the Chewbacca stand-in for the story is the Man-Thing.

I'm sad knowing that the man who created these stories isn't alive and died too young. But, cliche and all, his work is still an inspiration to me.Chris Duffyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02772797199649626618noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163464380269858289.post-1045159325963355642007-12-28T08:42:00.001-08:002007-12-28T09:36:26.345-08:00BHG courtesy of ACGI missed Christmas on the internet--but here's a Belated Holiday Greeting courtesy of FUNNY FILMS #3, Jan-Feb 1950, published by American Comics Group. I like that he goes for "X-mas" not Christmas. Makes it funnier somehow, though it may have been to simplify things. (He'd have to maybe use two panels/frames to get "christ" across.)

I was interested to learn on a well-annotated Wikipedia page that "X-mas" ain't no modern-day, commercial, secular-loving, Jesus-hating abbreviation of Christmas! It's actually a common European abbreviation dating back to at least the 1500s. So you can love Jesus AND write the word Christmas more quickly! This is a backup comic--presumably the adventures of THIRTEEN's costar Judy (who is a teen) as a pre-schooler. I do some blathering after the comics, if you have the patience.

There are a several reasons why I love this comic and felt compelled to share...

*It made me laugh several times throughout.

*I've never seen it reprinted before.

*"Deconstructing a famous character"--It's not really that, but there are enough parallels to Little Lulu comics (the comics Stanley was most associated with) that it has a fun "Little Lulu as a bullying little psycho" feeling.

*I love the WAYS she is crazy--the "iron elf," making Jimmy Fuzzy run away FOR her, calling Jimmy's mother rude...

*I identify with the suburban feeling--having to "play" outside in cold weather and being left to the mercy of whatever other kids live in your neighborhood.

*I can't shake the notion that if this comic had been a prose short story it'd be in 20th century short story collections alongside humorous "kids are bastards" stories by Thurber, O. Henry, Salinger, Shirley Jackson, etc. !

*Finally, there's that amazing, but easy-to-miss detail in this panel on page 3. (The arrow was added by me, in case you didn't guess.)

I mean, what the--?

On the pretentious end of analysis, that one detail moves the whole comic into magical realism--the world really does have elves. The story enters completely into the world of children. True!

A less excitble critic might point out that Stanley wrote at least dozens of stories where Tubby has adventures with tiny men from Mars. So little magic dudes are nothing extraordinary in kids comics. Also true!

But, it's the WAY Stanley pulls it off that's interesting. The struggling little elf is thrown into one panel, with no commentary, and it's colored so you almost miss it. And unlike Tubby and his tiny pals, Judy doesn't even see the little elf...and anyway, he doesn't really match her "iron elves" and "fairyland bus" ideas. So it comes off like: yeah, there are elves, there's magic, but it's not like this crazy girl and put-upon boy even notice.

I may be making too big a deal out of the one panel. So sue me. Stanley's comics always reward a closer look and that's why people are still blabbing about his comics 40 years later.

PS
If anyone else has read a lot of Judy Juniors (I've only read two or three) and wants to share their thoughts, I'd love to hear them. I'm funny like that.Chris Duffyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02772797199649626618noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163464380269858289.post-87827865983302236662007-08-04T10:25:00.000-07:002007-08-04T10:53:35.760-07:00Special message for vacationers: Don't be an idiot.I lied.

No John Stanley this time, but a timely message from one of those Golden Age comics PSAs that gives you advice so obvious, you wonder if the real message is "our readers are cavemen." (One clue: The "advice" is given to humans from a dog.) This is from a coverless humor comic from the 40s from National Periodicals. (One of the funny animal titles, don't know which one.)

You have to feel for Terry. Maybe he could accidentally "go missing" at a rest stop and find a family that remembered to load film in their camera (and packed some kibble).

I also feel a little bit sorry for "Dad." He makes all the mistakes, but I don't see anybody in his family helping. Give your brain-damaged father/spouse some help, gang!

Chris Duffyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02772797199649626618noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163464380269858289.post-54459620355873704312007-07-31T18:58:00.000-07:002007-08-17T19:26:16.303-07:00CRAZY QUILT by John StanleyHere it is! Enjoy its creepy goodness.

I know the predictable "that was no dream" ending makes it seem childish, but that's kind of why I like it. So direct! And so stagey--not at all in the shadow of EC, which is refreshing in comics horror!

My favorite line: "She was the greatest quilter who ever lived, he said...Her work hangs n museums...around the world..." Just cuz it's kind of funny in combo with the image of the terrified Miss Birkley writhing on the couch. (Also, on the last page, the casual pose of the Quiltman is funny. So are Grandma's shoes.)

Next time: The story that I think puts Stanley in a league with Shirley Jackson and other mid-century short story writers! I will prove this to be a fact! Maybe!Chris Duffyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02772797199649626618noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163464380269858289.post-77803040028779360702007-07-22T12:32:00.000-07:002007-07-22T12:59:13.615-07:00John Stanley horror comics: GOBLIN'S BALL 1 of 1So like I said, I'll be posting scans of comics that I feel are worth sharing and that are public domain (to my knowledge).

This first one is from Dell Comics TALES FROM THE TOMB, No. 1, 1962. A one page comic that's funny and creepy and written by John Stanley--Little Lulu writer/artist/mastermind, and unique comics stylist.

I'm taking Scott Shaw!'s word that this is written by John Stanley. Mr. Shaw! doesn't conjecture on its artist, and I sure can't guess. It's gotta be a Stanley script though. The book has many telltale Stanleyisms (breezy pacing, dialog that's never overwritten, willingness to have really big NO! word balloons, and a perverse inventiveness).

For Mr. Shaw!'s full take on this interesting bit of horror comics history, check out his article on TALES FROM THE TOMB No. 1 at his great "Oddball Comics" column. (And for that matter, read everything he's written. Mr. Shaw! knows his comics history!)

More Stanley horror to come. And in a few weeks, the Stanley comic that should be in "Best American Short Story" anthologies.Chris Duffyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02772797199649626618noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2163464380269858289.post-74136202538758323162007-07-22T12:26:00.000-07:002007-07-22T12:28:04.016-07:00Hello, world of blogging.
Chris Duffyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02772797199649626618noreply@blogger.com0
